I. INTRODUCTIONS

1.1 Guest Speaker – Rick White “Feed My Sheep” – Unable to attend.

– Call to order at 12:41 p.m.

II. ADVISORS’ REPORTS

2.1 – Karen Lubick announced Rick White’s inability to attend the meeting, and explained that White feeds the homeless in Palmdale three times a week. He now needs volunteers to help bag and distribute food for the new food bank that he has helped to form. She encouraged members to consider volunteering with a firm commitment.

Karen Lubick had processed the Alpha Iota applications and took roll from the applications.

She also reminded students that AVC Counselor Fuller will be holding a workshop 10-12 Friday, Oct. 16, in BE 245, and encouraged members to attend.

2.1 – Mary Margaret McGuire discussed the 2009 AGS Southern Region Fall Conference at Pasadena City College, Saturday, November 7. It will be $30 to attend. She passed around a sign-in sheet to receive an approximate idea of how many members will be attending. She will need to know who will be going for sure by Wednesday, Oct. 14. She passed out copies of the convention’s agenda. Attendees will leave the AVC parking lot at 6:30 a.m., and will return to the AVC parking lot by 5 to 5:30 p.m. Advisors that will be present: Mary Margaret McGuire, Matthew Jaffe, Harish Rao, and perhaps Tom Graves. Mary Margaret McGuire emphasized how the convention is a great opportunity for Alpha Iota members.

Passed out Service Point sheets. Service Points were counted for the Leadership Workshop on September 11, an Alpha Iota social, the Huntington Beach clean-up, and volunteering hours at Katryana Zide’s Haunted House.

2.3 – Matthew Jaffe wished to say some words of inspiration to the members. He thanked Lindsey Justice for her minutes as Secretary, and thanked all of the members for their exemplary high level of energy this semester.

2.4 – Tom Graves announced his consultation with Treasurer Mina Lim about the club’s accounting concerns. Announced that the club will now calculate the club’s income and debit on an Excel spreadsheet, which will yield two benefits: 1.) The Treasurer will now be able to cross-check Student Services, which will place more control in the club rather than in Student Services. 2.) The Treasurer will be able to pass the club’s accounts to the next administration as a record of the club’s past financial history.

Tom Graves also reminded the club of the lecture by Professor Charles Hood which would be held after the meeting.

2.5 – Harish Rao – Not Present.

II. OFFICERS’ REPORTS

3.1 President’s Report – Katryana Zide announced that two of the drivers for the Eco Freaks Huntington Beach Clean-up announced at the last minute that they would be unavailable to drive to the event, leaving the club with ten members without transportation. Rima Abukazam was able to find a car that would fit seven, and Aldinette Lockette announced at the meeting that she would drive her children and herself, thus solving the situation. Katryana Zide took this opportunity to remind everyone of the high level of interdependence among club members, and stressed that everyone should commit to their obligations.

Katryana also wished to thank everyone that had helped her the previous weekend in preparing for her family’s Haunted House. She asked for more members to volunteer their time in preparing for the event; volunteers will be needed the Saturdays and Sundays before Halloween. Interested members should contact Katryana Zide at kzide@avc.edu.

3.2 Vice President’s Report – Rima Abukazam announced that the Eco Freaks for the Huntington Beach Clean-up will be meeting at 5:00 a.m. the next day, Saturday Oct. 11, by the AVC Music Building. Encouraged members to bring warm clothes, sun screen, and a lunch.

Rima asked members to help with raising donated food, drinks, gift cards, and / or money for the Halloween Haunted House of Oct. 31. Announced that she had been able to receive two donated boxes of soda so far.

3.3 Treasurer’s Report – Min Lim announced the club’s balance to be $4,061. Announced that there are currently 8 inactive members and 47 active members.

3.4 Secretary’s Report – Lindsey Justice addressed the club’s expressed interest in having members become mentors through the United We Mentor nonprofit organization. Announced that mentors would mentor children in the 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th grade in the Antelope Valley. Mentors are required to attend a 60 minute orientation and six hours of training. Mentors will be required to commit to a one-year mentorship with their mentee, and will be mandated reporters. Lindsey encouraged prospective mentors to consider their mentorship duties seriously before committing to the program. Lindsey also encouraged members to consider attending the 7th Annual Antelope Valley Aids Walk on Oct. 10. Last minute registration would be held at 8:00 a.m. She encouraged members to talk to her after the meeting regarding additional information.

3.5 ICC Representative – Diana Mercado – No Report.

3.6 PR Officer – Jun Ueno discussed the vouchers for the Oct. 19th Car Wash at Louis Burgers. Asked for tickets and money to be turned in at the Car Wash, or if members will not be attending the car wash, to be turned to in to him at the Oct. 16th Alpha Iota regular meeting.

Madelaine Codecido will be having signs made at her house after the meeting, Oct. 9, at 3:00 p.m. Jun encouraged members to come to her house to help make the signs, and urged members to come to him after the meeting for additional information regarding Madelaine’s address.

3.7 Historians – Tara Tomlinson and Lisa Allen – Announced that one of them would be attending the Eco Freaks Huntington Beach excursion to take photographs of the event. Announced that they would also be taking photos of members outside after the meeting which would be used for the club’s display case, and encouraged members to come have their pictures taken.

3.8 Webmaster – Stephanie Conley – No Report

IV. DISCUSSION OF EVENTS

4.1 Upcoming Alpha Iota Events and Dates

4.2 Freaky Friday Halloween Dance – Mina Lim discussed and showed a diagram of the floor plan for the cafeteria’s Halloween Dance. Members discussed aesthetic choices for lighting and design, as well as issues regarding crowd control and security concerns. Karen Lubick posed the question of whether faculty would be invited. Discussed the issue of whether to hire a DJ for $175 (or possibly less) or to simply use a free sound system for the event.

4.3 Cold Weather Program – Kiri Weingarten posed three dates that the club could volunteer for the program: 11/4, 11/29, or 11/30. The last two dates would be during Alpha Iota’s vacation. There will be a greater discussion concerning this program at the next meeting, Oct. 16.

4.4 Display Case – Aldinette Lockette reminded members that the display case would be set-up after the meeting at 3:00 p.m. in front of the bookstore. Asked members to donate and bring construction paper and to volunteer their time to help set up the display.

V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

October 2, 2009 – Theresa Soos motioned to approve the minutes made by Lindsey Justice. Mina Lim seconded the motion. Motion unanimously passed.

VI. FACULTY LED COLLOQUIA SERIES (After Meeting)

6.1 “Resumes and More” by Charles Hood – 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. One Service Point will be awarded to attendees.

VII. ADJOURNMENT

Diana Mercado made motion to adjourn. Tara Tomlinson seconded the motion. Motion unanimously passed.
